Obituary of Henriette Martin

Henriette P. Martin (nee Pelletier), 97 years old, beloved wife of the late Donald J. Martin, passed away July 18, 2023, at home after a short illness. Hennie was born on September 7, 1925, in Lewiston, Maine to Joseph and Ida Pelletier. She had 4 brothers Bert, Laurier, Leo and Lucien all of Lewiston, Maine and a sister Cecille from southern California, all of whom predeceased her.

She was raised on a farm and graduated from Litchfield Academy. After high school, she went to Washington, DC and worked at the Pentagon to support the war effort typing weapon manuals and allegedly “translating messages gathered from the French underground,” using her native French language skills.

She married Donald Martin in 1947 and together they raised eight children. In 1954 the family moved from Maine to the San Francisco Bay area in California for 10 years. There she worked for Oliver Tire Company and was a homemaker. When the family moved east, she began a long career in the data processing center at American Can Company in Metuchen, New Jersey. When the company moved to Greenwich, CT in 1978 the family moved to Brookfield and she finished her 21-year career, retiring in 1987.

Hennie enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was active and a sport about traveling and trying new things. She enjoyed spending time at her camp on the coast of Maine with her children, siblings, nieces and nephews over the years. She loved her garden and watching and feeding the birds. She especially loved sitting at the kitchen table chatting and spending time with her grandchildren. In recent years, she developed a passion for jigsaw puzzles. She loved slot machines at the casino despite her rarely winning.

She is survived by five sons and two daughters. Dennis Martin (spouse Barbara), his twin Daniel Martin (spouse Henry), Tom Martin (spouse Jeff), Jo Ann Corsaro, William Martin, Elaine Martin, Mark Martin. Her eldest son James predeceased her in 2014 and is survived by his wife Marcy Tabisz Martin. Hennie cherished her 11 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Henriette was a devote Roman Catholic who participated in daily mass on television when she was no longer able to travel to church. She was a parishioner at St. Joseph Church, 1 Obtuse Hill Rd, Brookfield where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on July 25th at 10:00 am with interment to be held at St Peter Cemetery, 71 Lake Ave Ext, Danbury when her husband’s cremains will be joined with hers.
