Obituary of Sr. Elizabeth Scully
Sister Elizabeth Scully (Sr. St Laura of Mary) a Sister of the Congregation of Notre Dame died peacefully surrounded by her CND Sisters on April 21, 2018 at Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton, CT. Born in Waterbury, she was predeceased by her parents, John Scully and Laura (Rush) Scully, her brothers John and Charles, and her sisters Ruth McDonald and Mary Murphy. Sister Elizabeth graduated from Kingsbury School and Waterbury Catholic High School in Waterbury, CT. In 1946, she entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in Montreal, Canada professing her first vows in August 1948 and her perpetual vows in 1954.
Then followed almost 70years of deep commitment to young people in Catholic schools and to Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame. Sister Elizabeth served as teacher and/or principal in New York, Illinois and Connecticut, She was also Mistress of Novices and Provincial Leader in the United States Province of the Congregation. She ministered as Consultant in Religious Education and Associate Superintendent in the Catholic Schools Office in Providence, RI. And Associate Superintendent of Catholic Schools in Newark, NJ. At Lourdes Health Care Center where she retired, her influence touched the staff who cared for her in many loving ways. Sister Elizabeth’s unique gifts were to treat others with respect, gentleness and compassion. She will be deeply missed by her Sisters in the Congregation, her nieces and nephews, her friends, and the many people she influenced. Sister’s wake and funeral will be held at Villa Notre Dame, Belden Hill Road in Wilton.
