Obituary of Janette Humphrey

Janette Humphrey September 14, 1907 - February 18, 2005 Janette "Jean" Humphrey of Brookfield, wife of the late Burton G. Humphrey, died at Danbury Hospital on Friday, February 18, 2005 at the age of 97. A strong and self reliant woman, she lived at home until just before her death. Her smile and gentle sense of humor were her most characteristic qualities. Jean was born on a farm in Washington, CT , the daughter of the late Robert and Ruth (Pond) Hollister. She attended Washington Public Schools, traveling there each day in a horse drawn cart or sleigh. She attended nursing school at Hartford Hospital in the 1920's. She married in 1927, settling in Danbury, and moved to Brookfield in 1936. She raised eight children, managing a large family through the depression and the second World War, while her husband started and ran two auto-related businesses, Humphrey Brothers and Burt Humphrey and Sons. Late in life she developed an interest in painting and became a skilled amateur water colorist. She was a devoted member of Candlewood Baptist Church. She leaves four sons: Burton and his wife Rosa Humphrey of Sunset, ME, James and his wife Meredith of Danielson, CT, Richard of Sherman, CT, and George of Brewster, Mass. Three Daughters: Joan and her husband Elmore Andrews of Belfast, ME, Alice H. Lund of Canton, CT and Nancy and her husband Claude Albert of Haddam, CT. 26 Grandchildren and 22 Great Grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by one daughter: Barbara Mangum of Falmouth Foreside, ME and her brother Walter Hollister of Bridgewater. Funeral Information Friends may call for a celebration of Jean's life which will take place at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, CT on Tuesday from 5-8pm. Funeral Services will be held at the Candlewood Baptist Church located on Stadley Rough Road, Danbury on Wednesday, February 23rd at 1:00PM. Interment will take place in Central Cemetery in Brookfield, in the spring. Donations Information Donations may be made to the Candlewood Baptist Church.
