Obituary of Gene R. Bailey

Gene R. Bailey June 25, 1922 - November 18, 2008 Gene R. Bailey, of Cross Street, Danbury, beloved husband of Marietta Molinaro Bailey, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, November 18, 2008. He was born in Danbury on June 25, 1922, son of the late James and Ethel (Raymond) Bailey. Mr. Bailey was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Navy as a ship's repair mechanic on the Zaniah in the Pacific Theater. Stationed in Pearl Harbor, Okinawa, and spent time in the Philippines, he and his fellow mechanics repaired countless ships during almost constant attacks. A few years ago he wrote a book, "Navy Service Experiences in WWII." Mr. Bailey attended local Danbury' schools and gradated from former trade school on Main Street. After being in the service he joined Boesch Manufacturing and worked his way up to a methods engineer and retired in 1986 from Jovil Manufacturing. He was a parishioner of St. Peter Church. He was an active member of the Danbury Senior Center, and started the Veteran's Day Program and the Woodcarving Program. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans, and AARP #1847. He enjoyed lawn mower repair, woodworking, was an avid "Tinker-er" and loved to watch wrestling. In addition to his cherished wife of 61 ½ years, Marietta, he will be sadly missed by his son, Robert G. Bailey of Danbury; his daughter, Cathy Layok and her husband, Paul of Danbury; his three grandsons, Craig, Kyle, and Dennis Layok also of Danbury. He is also survived by two sisters, Myrtle Brosz of Danbury and Lucille Lewis and her husband, Elmer of Bethel; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brothers, Donald, Carl, and James Bailey. Funeral Information A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 9:30am at St. Peter Church. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, on Friday between the hours of 4:00 and 8:00pm.
