Obituary of Dorothea Engstrom

Dorothea Engstrom April 15, 1919 - March 28, 2008 Dorothea (Wood Engstrom, age 88, devoted wife of 48 years to the late C. Richard Engstrom, passed away on Friday, March 28th at Ashlar of Newtown, after a long illness. Dorothea was born April 15, 1919 in Danbury, daughter of the late Walter B. and Elsie (Ferry) Wood. She was a graduate of Danbury High School, Class of 1938. Following graduation, she was employed part-time over the years as a bookkeeper for several local businesses. A longtime resident of Brookfield, she was very active in volunteerism and community service. Former member of the First Methodist of Danbury (where she served as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher for many years), she was presently a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church of Brookfield. Dubbed the "Queen Mother" of Girl Scouting in Brookfield, Dorothea (Dot) served as a Brownie Troop 421 Leader (50 years), adult trainer, neighborhood rganizer, consultant, and was a member of several council-wide task forces. She received several Girl Scout honors and awards, including the prestigious "Spirit of Girl Scouting" Award. She was also a member of many Brookfield organizations, in addition to the Danbury Travelers' and Danbury Yacht Club Auxiliary. In 1999, she was named "Woman of the Year" for the town of Brookfield. Dot is survived by her daughter, Deanne Sniffin and her husband Allan of Brookfield; her grandson Timothy Sniffin of Frederick, MD; her granddaughter, Tricia Ritchie and her husband, Branden of Alexandria, VA; and her great grandson, Caden Ritchie, also of Alexandria, VA. She was predeceased by her brother, Walter B. Wood, Jr of Pearl City, Hawaii. Funeral Information Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 2nd, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Rte. 133, Brookfield, CT. at 11:00am. Burial will follow in Prince of Peace Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at the Brookfield Funeral Home, 786 Federal Road, Brookfield, on Tuesday, April 1st between the hours of 5:00 - 7:00pm. Donations Information In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Brookfield Girl Scout Neighborhood, or Prince of Peace Lutheran Church of Brookfield.
