Obituary of Hazel L. Blackman

Hazel L. Blackman December 11, 1912 - May 31, 2008 Hazel Louise Blackman, age 95, a longtime resident of Brookfield, wife of the late S. Gordon Blackman, died Saturday, May 31st at Danbury Hospital, following a short illness. She was born on December 11, 1912, in Port Chester, NY, daughter of the late Mortimer and Amelia (Speechly) Masters. She attended New Milford Schools. Following her husband's death in 1961, she was employed at National Semiconductor, Amphenol, and Grolier. Upon retirement, she moved to Brooks Quarry, Brookfield, and more recently to Bethel Healthcare. She is survived by her two daughters, Jane W. Sedor and her husband, Paul of Brookfield and Elizabeth B. Tolles and her husband, William of Alexandria, VA; her four grandchildren, Kim Vera, Stacy Burger, Laurie Tolles, and Christopher Tolles; and four great grandchildren, Kaeley and Nicholas Vera, Quinnlyn and Mason Burger. She was predeceased by her sister, Ruth Sullivan. Hazel was very much a people person, and had been active over the years in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Brookfield elementary school, community activities in Brookfield, AARP and the Republican Women's Club. Her love of flowers became evident when she cultivated a large garden including vegetables, during and after WWII. She initiated a friendship garden at Brooks Quarry, and encouraged others to plant flowers and trees. Her love of travel took her on several AARP trips accompanied by her beloved friend, Ann Obergfell. She also traveled to visit relatives in California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida and Vermont. She enjoyed many trips to Cape Ann, MA, and Cape Cod, with her sister, Ruth. Funeral Information Funeral Services will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brookfield, on Saturday, June 7th at 2:00pm. Burial of Cremains will follow in Central Cemetery, Brookfield.
