Obituary of Mary Layok

Mary Layok September 07, 1911 - December 01, 2007 Mary Layok, age 96 passed away at Danbury Hospital on Saturday, December 1, 2007 with family at her bedside. Mary was born in Danbury on September 7, 1911, daughter of Samuel and Mary (Urbovsky) Surovy. In her earlier years, Mary was employed at Lee's Hat Factory. She was co-owner and operator of Layok's Food Market with her husband, John for over 30 years. She and John enjoyed many years of retirement at their vacation home in Margate, FL. Mary was predeceased by her husband of 66 years in December 2006, and by her 3 brothers, John, Andrew and Samuel over many years. Mary was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of which she belonged to the Ladies Aid and the Slovak Evangelical Society. She was also a member of the local AARP. Mary is survived by her two sons, John E. Layok and wife Hilda of East Hampton, CT and Robert Layok and wife Charlene of Danbury. She also leaves four grandchildren Gregory Layok of Chicago, Jennifer Highfield and her husband Kevin of Las Vegas, Jason Layok of Danbury and Emily Layok of East Hampton, CT. Mary has one great grandchild, Jack Dylan Highfield of Las Vegas and several nieces and nephews. Mary will be missed by all those that have been enriched by her warmth, humor and genuine concern for everyone she had had contact with throughout the years. Her family will forever hold dear her zest of life. Funeral Information Funeral services will be held Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at 10 a.m. Interment in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery will follow. The family will receive friends at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Donations Information Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 44 Spring St., Danbury, 06810.
