Obituary of David M. Barbour

David Michael Barbour, Esq., of Newtown, beloved husband of Annette (Busch) Barbour peacefully passed away at Yale New Haven Hospital on Tuesday, September 26th, after a courageous seven-month battle with illness. David’s family never left his side, advocating for him relentlessly in the same manner in which he did for them during his entire life.

In addition to his cherished wife of 39 years, David will be deeply missed by his children, Michael Barbour, Meghan Barbour and her husband, John Gouveia, and Emily Barbour; in addition to his grandchildren, Oliver and Scarlett. He is survived by his siblings, Fred Adams, Dolores Benante, and Robin Reed; as well as several nieces and nephews. David was predeceased by his infant daughter, Catherine Marie Barbour.

David was born in Danbury on July 10, 1959, son of the late David and Loyola (Deinhardt) Barbour. A true ‘mad hatter’ at heart, David graduated from Danbury High School in 1977 and later from Western Connecticut State University in 1984 with a BBA in Accounting and minor in Cultural Anthropology. David pursued his calling and successfully became a lawyer after achieving his Juris Doctor from Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio, in 1987.

He began his career as a courtroom attorney in the Danbury area before becoming legal counsel in the corporate private sector. He specialized in commercial finance law on the lending and leasing contractual side of aviation, maritime, real estate, and manufacturing at Xerox, Mercedes Benz Credit Corporation, RVI Group, and Terex, where he recently retired from at the of age 61 as Assistant General Counsel. He achieved everything he set out to do within his career as a lawyer, business entrepreneur, and real estate investor and realized that time is more important than anything. He couldn’t wait any longer to be home with his family. His two years of retirement were the best two years of his life. He made every day count.

David is a proud Eagle Scout and also attained the rank of Wood Badge. He lived his life by the Boy Scout Moto, “Be Prepared” and loved being Assistant Scout Master of Troop 70 in Newtown with his son Michael, a fellow Eagle Scout. David also guided his daughter, Meghan, on her path to earning her Girl Scout Gold Award. He loved history, coins, landscaping, horology, art, economics, and trains. He could answer any question or fix anything, and if he didn’t have an answer he always knew exactly how to find it. David loved being outside and could often be found on his tractors, Gravely, Gator, or Harley, fishing in his pond, or in his woodlot beneath the trees. David was a force to be reckoned with, a true gentleman, and a modern day renaissance man. He lived a life of principle. He had an unwavering grit about him and was as generous as he was kind. He would always find the good in anything. Since retiring, he spent every day with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Nothing made him prouder and he lived for his family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 5th at 11:30am at St. Rose of Lima Church in Newtown. Burial in Wooster Cemetery will follow.

The family will receive friends at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury on Wednesday between the hours of 5:00 – 7:00pm.
