To Mark and family - my thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time. While I didn't know your dad, the obituary displays the love you had for him. It is evident he lived his dash well and to the full. I'm sure he influenced a lot of young people in his teaching career and has left a wonderful legacy.

Tom"s "dash" was indeed well-used. His talents and sense of humor throughout every challenge he faced were a gift to all. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Judy, Karen & Mark;
In 1968, Tom was my 7th grade Industrial Arts teacher at East Ridge Jr High School, I was 14 and he was only 26. He truly left an impression on me and many of my friends. We created a company in class called POP-FIAT (Production of Offset Printing - Freshman Industrial Arts Team); I'd run into Tom many times over the years and kept our friendship alive. He was truly one of those rare people that made a lasting positive impact on so many of us. I'm sad to see him go, but I know how much he suffered during his brave battle with cancer. I look forward to seeing him again in Heaven. God Bless you Tom; Rest in Peace.

Tom was an inspiration to all of us. He believed that Together Everyone Achieves More.
And he was a truly dedicated team member and friend. Tom gave many hours of volunteer time for Ridgefield’s 25 year teacher-produced television show. We are so saddened by Tom’s passing.
Rest in peace, dear Tom.
AnneMarie Surfaro-Boehme, Ridgefield

This reminded Tom of a poem that he knows. He is the man who always can recall poems that he knows. He is a man of great, great wisdom, whom I respect so deeply it makes that lump in my throat. It is a piece of beauty, this pretty little poem, that makes us think about how we should all live our lives.
The Dash
by Linda Ellis
I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
from the beginning...to the end.
He noted that first came the date of her birth
and spoke of the following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time
that she spent alive on earth...
and now only those who loved her
know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own;
the cars....the house...the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard...
are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left.
(You could be at "dash midrange.")
If we could just slow down enough
to consider what's true and real,
and always try to understand
the way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger,
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we've never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect,
and more often wear a smile...
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.
So, when your eulogy's being read
with your life's actions to rehash...
would you be proud of the things they
say about how you spend your dash?
