Obituary of Barbara A Dominakus

Barbara A. Dominakus, 87, cherished wife of the late Joseph Dominakus, Jr., died peacefully at Glen Hill Center on Monday, May 8, 2023. She was born in Danbury on October 21, 1935, daughter of the late Michael and Veronica (Falis) Loya.

Barbara graduated from St. Peter’s School and Danbury High School, Class of 1953. She received her BS in Education from Danbury State Teacher’s College (known today as Western Connecticut State University) and an MA in Education Supervision from Fairfield University. She was a first-grade teacher for Beaver Brook Elementary School for three years, a fifth-grade teacher for Mill Ridge School for one year and a second-grade teacher for Great Plain School for forty years.  Because of Barbara’s love for teaching, she continued as a substitute teacher for ten more years after she retired.

Barbara was a vibrant, loving woman who treasured every person she knew, especially her family. As a very detail-oriented and organized person, Barbara was always involved in hosting an event, fundraiser, or party, especially at St. Gregory’s Church and St. Gregory’s School. Her home was frequently filled with visitors, for special occasions and more often, for casual get-togethers. She made everyone feel welcome and the quantity of food offered was a priority!

Volunteering was a large part of Barbara’s life. She belonged to the Danbury Junior Service League, Ladies’ Guild at St. Gregory’s Church, ran events for St. Gregory’s School and was always helping family or friends. Being a talented, creative person, she knitted many blankets and made beautiful crafts, most of which were used to sell for various fundraisers. Many people may remember her for the beautiful ornaments she made and her Christmas Tree contribution to Ann’s Place in Danbury.

Barbara was also a very dedicated teacher. Being a teacher was one of the most important aspects of her life. She told each class every year that they were a “family” away from home. Every student received individual attention and benefitted from Barbara’s careful academic instruction. The students felt the love Barbara brought to the classroom.

She will be missed by her two children, Barbara Braatz (Timothy), and Thomas Dominakus (Heidi); her four grandchildren, Brendan and Julia Braatz, Douglas and Benjamin Dominakus; and her sisters Patricia Murphy (William), and Nancy Reidy (Bernie). She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

She was predeceased by her sister, Dorothy Kroha (David).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 16th at 10:30am at St. Gregory the Great Church. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, on Monday between the hours of 5:00-7:00pm.
