Obituary of Bernice Ullmann

Newtown – Mrs. Bernice Elaine (Agines) Ullmann, of Newtown, passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 26, 2022. She was the wife of Charles “Bud” Ullmann.

Mrs. Ullmann was born January 30, 1931 in Brooklyn, New York. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Hilda (Orenstein) Agines. She was raised in Brooklyn and attended James Madison High School and graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in education. She attended Syracuse University where she met her husband of 70 years.

Mrs. Ullmann was always involved in volunteer organizations. She hosted Fresh Air Fund children in the summers and served as chairwoman of Interfaith in Westchester for 7 years. In CT she was honored in 2011 by the UJA Federation for her time as President and also by Hadassah for her years on the Board. She was also a “reading partner” for 7 years and started a Book Group in 1997.

Her favorite project was “Share a Bear” which she started in 1998. Bernice collected stuffed animals which were no longer wanted. With the assistance of many friends and Bud she sorted, cleaned, repaired, and decorated the toys which were given to camps, daycare groups and any organizations which supplied them to needy kids locally and around the world – even to a local school which allowed each student to choose one as a birthday gift.

When the pandemic stopped the activity, she added up the numbers and found that as of January 2020, “Share a Bear” had distributed 79,000 stuffed animals.

In addition to her husband “Bud”, Mrs. Ullmann is survived by her children: Linda Schumacher-Brown and her husband Marty, Glenn Ullmann and his wife Lisa, Mandy Tolson and her husband Jeff and Clifford Ullmann and his wife Sabrina, 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. She was predeceased by her brother: Martin Agines.

Bernice was a devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother. She made everyone around her feel special. She had an attitude of positivity and warmth. Her love for her family and cherished friends was palpable.

Her essence will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ullmann will be held on November 23rd at 11am at Adath Israel Synagogue in Newtown. The Cornell Memorial Home 247 White Street Danbury is in charge of arrangements.
