Obituary of Florence Barnum

Florence Louise (Garavel) Barnum, 101, of Danbury passed away peacefully in her home on December 12, 2021.  She was the devoted wife to the late Edward William Barnum who passed away in 2003.

Florence was born in Danbury on May 10, 1920 to the late John and Louise Garavel.  Florence was a homemaker who delighted in raising her 7 children, spending time with her grandchildren, and babysitting for her friend’s and neighbor’s children. She loved cooking for her family, especially preparing large and beautiful holiday meals.

Florence loved music, learning lyrics to songs, and reciting children’s poetry.  She was an avid walker in her neighborhood where her vibrant marigolds were complimented by those who appreciated her passion for gardening.

Florence will be sadly missed by her children: Richard Barnum and his wife Sarah of Maine, Joan Lamporte of Waterbury, Judy Warwick of New York, Nancy Madore of Florida, Linda Zank and her husband Richard of New Fairfield, Carol Repp and her husband Michael of Kansas, and John Barnum and his wife Wendy of Newtown; 15 grandchildren, many more great-grandchildren, and 6 great- great-grandchildren.  In addition to her husband Ed, Florence was predeceased by two of her sons-in-law: Lewis Lamporte and Robert Madore.

Florence’s family would like to thank her caregiver, Karen Carter, who took kind and gentle care of her over the years.

All services for Florence will be private and at the convenience of her family.  There are no calling hours.   If you are moved to share a memory on our Tribute Wall, her family would be very appreciative.  All donations honoring Florence’s life may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org or by calling 703-359-4440.
