Obituary of Albert Allan Cole

Albert Allan Cole May 19, 1931 - February 12, 2011 Albert Allan Cole, 79, of New Milford, husband of Penelope (Thomsen) Cole, died peacefully on Saturday, February 12th at New Milford Hospital. He was born on May 19, 1931 in Danbury, son of the late George and Margaret (Baldwin) Cole. Al graduated from Henry Abbott Regional Technical School in 1950 where he studied carpentry and was captain of the baseball team. During his time at Abbott Tech, Al pitched two no hitters, was named to the All Star Team and was ultimately offered a contract to play for a Philadelphia A's minor league team. Al did not accept this offer and instead proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951. He served at home and abroad for eight years and eventually found himself, by chance, on the same naval ship as his only brother. During and after his time in the service, Al's passion for baseball led him to play on and coach several intramural teams throughout the years. In 2001, the City of Danbury honored Al by choosing him as a recipient for the 2001 Old Timers Athletic Association of Greater Danbury Sports Award, an honor he truly cherished. Fortunately, Al passed down his love for sports and he found great pleasure in watching his sons and grandchildren play numerous sports over the years. Aside from developing his passion for baseball, Al's time at Abbott Tech provided the framework for a successful career in the carpentry field. Al worked for Luke F. Sweeney in Danbury for several years, and at many points found himself among family as his brother, sons and a nephew all held positions at Sweeney's as well. Al was a skillful carpenter and one of the most respected construction superintendents in the City of Danbury. With several years in the industry, Al was a proud member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. He leaves behind his wife, Penelope; his brother, Clifford Cole and his wife, Lillian of Danbury; his two sons, Robert Cole and his wife, Nellie, and Allan Cole, all of Danbury; his four grandchildren, Danielle, Erica, Ian, and Lucas; and his two nephews, Jimmy and John Cole of Danbury. He is also survived by five stepchildren, and nine step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Jeffrey; and his daughter-in-law, Karen (Anderson) Cole. Al's tenacious personality and love for family and country will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Funeral Information A Celebration of Al's Life will be held on Friday, February 18th at 7:30pm at the Cornell Memorial Home. Burial in Wooster Cemetery will be held privately. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening between the hours of 4:00 and 7:30pm. Donations Information In lieu of flowers, Al's family asks that donations are made to the Old Timer's Association of Danbury.
